England 1691

Silver

Dimensions

20.40cm high (  8.03 inches high)

Description / Expertise

The cylindrical tankard has spreading sides running down to a foot cast with straight gadroons, the lower part of the body is applied with foliate cut card work, with a moulded band above. The cover has a similar band of gadrooning, and is applied with lobed fluting with a swirling fluted finial and scroll thumb piece. With scrolling leaf-capped handle terminating in foliage.

Queen’s College, Cambridge possesses a very similar tankard of 1684 that was given to the college by James Fortrey (R. A. Crighton, Cambridge Plate, 1975, pp. 57/58, no. TJ12) although the handle is rather more ornate.
