Description / Expertise

Cameo cut with birds and bamboo, the raised design heavily gilded.
No other example of this form can be found, but the drawings for this vase shape are in the Webb design book (ref. 290), listed as ‘tusk’ with a total cost of 50 shillings. The drawings are reproduced by Grover, in English Cameo Glass, pp.227 and 419.
Jules Barbe was a Frenchman recruited by Webb in 1878. He worked exclusively for Webb until 1901. His speciality was gilding and his unique technique earned him awards in France, England and the USA. His work at Webb was predominantly on ‘Oriental’ pieces such as this vase.
